The Interdisciplinary Centre for Conservation Science (ICCS) is an academic research group based in the Department of Zoology, University of Oxford . Our work addresses the challenges that humanity faces in halting the decline of global biodiversity. We work at the interface of social and ecological systems, using a range of methodologies and interdisciplinary approaches to address key issues in current conservation, and bringing together multidisciplinary teams who are best placed to address these issues.
ICCS is a key partner of the UKRI GCRF Trade, Development and the Environment TRADE Hub, led by UNEP-WCMC, and funded by the UK Research and Innovation’s Global Challenges Research Fund. It is the first research hub of its kind, bringing together over 50 organisations from 15 different countries to help make trade sustainable for people and the planet. Together, these partners from industry, trade agencies, academia, governments and civil society will study all stages of various supply chains, revealing damaging links and potential pathways for lasting change. We will investigate the trends and impacts of trade in: 1) wildlife 2) wild meat and 3) agricultural goods. Their trade will be traced across Brazil, Cameroon, China, Democratic Republic of Congo, Gabon, Indonesia, Republic of Congo, and Tanzania, as well as globally.
The first set of AfOx TRADE fellowships will bring three African researchers and practitioners to work together with Oxford researchers on TRADE Hub related research projects: those pertaining to trade in wildlife, wildmeat and agricultural good in any of the TRADE Hub countries, or in any African county. We are especially looking for projects that tackle issues of sustainability in current trade chains, by increasing our understanding of trade chain dynamics and/or proposing and testing solutions. Projects are welcomed from any TRADE-relevant discipline including (but not constrained to) ecology, zoology, conservation, economics, statistics, computing, health, engineering, environmental change and agricultural science.
Fellowships will run during the Trinity term (April to June 2020), for 3 months non-renewable. The Fellows appointed will be provided with accommodation and a temporary University card for the term. The fellowship will also include airfare, visa fee and a maintenance allowance for incidental expenses. Fellows will be encouraged to present their findings through peer-reviewed publication and at international conferences, and further funding may be available to support this.
Eligibility
An applicant for the AfOx TRADE Visiting Fellowship must fulfil the following criteria:
- Applicants are expected to hold a PhD or equivalent research/practical experience. Applications are welcome from academic or non-academic professionals involved in TRADE-relevant activities in NGO, government, research or policy institutions. Applicants must be African national working in an African institution.
- Applicants must either have a existing collaboration with Oxford or be in contact with a potential collaborating researcher at Oxford. We would be very happy to suggest potential collaborators if you do not have one in mind; please contact carlyn.samuel@zoo.ox.ac.uk
- Applicants are required to have at least one reference detailing specific contributions of the applicant to particular fields of study, and how a TRADE fellowship will support career progression.
- The application must include a short (400 – 500 word) research proposal that clearly outlines the proposed work to be undertaken during the fellowship and how the period of the fellowship will lead to the completion specific outputs.
